Has Freerider or Luggie Shut Down in the UK?

Freerider HQ in Taiwan

Since the news broke in the summer of 2025 regarding the liquidation of Local Mobility UK Limited, there has been a massive wave of confusion across the mobility scooter community.

Because Local Mobility operated heavily under the trading names "Luggie Scooters" and "Luggie UK", many customers naturally assumed that the actual manufacturer of the scooter had gone out of business.

Let us set the record straight immediately: No, Freerider and the Luggie brand have not shut down.

The confusion stems from the difference between the dealership that sold the scooters and the manufacturer that builds them. Here is exactly what happened and why your beloved Luggie brand is safe, secure, and still operating.

The Manufacturer vs. The Dealership

To understand the situation, it helps to look at how the mobility industry works, which is very similar to the car industry.

Who Went Out of Business? (The Dealership)

Local Mobility UK Limited was an independent retail dealership. They bought scooters from the manufacturer and sold them to the public. To market themselves, they used trading names like "Luggie Scooters" and "Luggie UK".

When Local Mobility went into Creditors' Voluntary Liquidation in mid 2025, it was the dealership that closed its doors, not the manufacturer.

Who is Still Operating? (The Manufacturer)

Freerider is the global manufacturer and the company that actually designs, builds, and supplies the Luggie range.

Freerider is still fully operational, financially secure, and continues to produce the world’s leading folding travel scooters. They have not shut down. The Luggie brand is alive and well, and Freerider continues to supply approved UK dealers with new scooters, parts, and technical support.

The Future of the Luggie Brand in the UK

Because Freerider remains a strong, global manufacturer, the supply of new Luggie scooters, genuine replacement parts, and lithium batteries is completely uninterrupted in the UK.

If you already own a Luggie, your scooter has not suddenly become an obsolete "orphan." If you need a new battery for your next cruise, a replacement tyre, or a complex repair, the parts are still being manufactured and are readily available.
